Our research

The challenge: an incomplete picture

Today, we do not have a comprehensive picture of the regulatory code of an organism. We cannot accurately predict gene regulation from DNA sequence.

Our approach with EPIC

We will combine newly developed omics assays probing all steps of gene expression, with robotics that allow sampling across species and conditions, as well as high-throughput synthetic biology allowing testing regulatory elements, and AI to integrate all data to ultimately develop a comprehensive model of the eukaryotic regulatory code.

Scientist at work

Our main aims

  • Establish the first comprehensive genome-scale map of post-transcriptional regulation across 500 million years of evolution
  • Determine how natural and artificial sequence variation in untranslated regions influences post-transcriptional regulation
  • Unravel molecular mechanisms underlying post-transcriptional regulation
  • Establish predictive models of the post-transcriptional code
  • Establish a predictive model of the regulatory code
  • Design sequences based on our models for optimal regulation of genes and pathways

Road to impact

EPIC’s approach, insights, models and datasets will help understand and predict post-transcriptional regulation and, ultimately, enable genotype-to-phenotype models for basic biology, medical and biotechnology applications.
